A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has revealed that resistance training, such as weight lifting, not only strengthens muscles but also benefits the brain. The research found that engaging in these types of exercises can lower the risk of various medical conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, by enhancing the brain’s ability to access and process glucose.

The study highlighted the importance of stable blood sugar levels for overall brain health, as prolonged instability can lead to inflammation and insulin resistance, hindering the brain’s energy supply and potentially causing long-term damage. However, a single session of resistance training was shown to decrease blood glucose and insulin levels for up to 24 hours.

To help beginners ease into weight training, NYC-based fitness coach Claudette Sariya shared six basic bodyweight exercises that lay the foundation for more complex movements. Mastering squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, lunges, and carries without weights can build strength and prepare individuals for more challenging workouts.

Furthermore, research suggests that regular exercise, even in the form of simple activities like walking, can increase brain volume and promote brain health. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that individuals who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity had larger brain volumes in key regions responsible for memory and information processing.

Dr. David Merrill, the study co-author, emphasized the positive impact of even moderate levels of physical activity on brain health. Maintaining or increasing brain mass through exercise could have potential neuroprotective effects and reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
