Hongkonger Vriko Kwok’s Emotional Journey in Lululemon’s Ultra-Marathon
Hongkonger Vriko Kwok found herself in a moment of despair on the fourth day of Lululemon’s ultra-marathon, Further, where she aimed to run 300km in six days. Every part of her body was in agony, and she broke down in tears at a rest station, feeling “awful”. However, her teammates rallied around her, with seven of the nine other women in the ultra-marathon adjusting their goals to support Kwok as she pushed towards the 160km mark.
In the end, the 32-year-old exceeded her own expectations by running 303.31km in the ultra-marathon, held in California in March. Just a year prior, she couldn’t even run 1km continuously. Reflecting on her experience, Kwok described the ultra-marathon as a rollercoaster of highs and lows, emphasizing the importance of pushing through the tough moments to reach new heights.
Kwok’s journey to becoming a runner was not an easy one. Growing up in various places around the world, she faced teasing and bullying for her size, which deterred her from being active until her 20s. It wasn’t until Lululemon invited her to participate in Further that she discovered a passion for running and embraced the challenge it presented.
Despite being the only participant without running experience in the ultra-marathon, Kwok found her pace and pushed herself to achieve more than she ever thought possible. She emphasized the importance of listening to one’s body and finding joy in physical activity, regardless of others’ opinions.
Kwok’s story serves as a reminder to young women to pursue their passions and not let external judgments hold them back. By overcoming her own doubts and fears, she not only achieved a remarkable athletic feat but also inspired others to challenge societal norms and embrace their own unique journey towards fitness and well-being.
