Supporting Women in Mental Health Care: Empowering Voices and Resources for Caregivers

The Importance of Women Supporting Each Other in Mental Health Awareness

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, women in Jackson, Mississippi are coming together to support each other in their efforts to care for loved ones with dementia and mental illness. In a recent event titled “Women’s Health: Empowering Voices of Women” at the Jackson Medical Mall, women gathered to have an open conversation about the struggles of dealing with mental illness and caring for loved ones.

Psychiatrist Dr. Colibri Jenkins highlighted the fact that women serving as caregivers often experience depression and anxiety at higher rates than others. “Women are most often the caregivers of our elders,” said Jenkins. “It’s important for us to take time to realize that caregivers experience burnout at a higher rate than nearly anyone else.”

One attendee, Lisa Scott, shared her personal experience of coping with mental health issues within her family. From her grandmother to her mother and herself, Scott has dealt with dementia, mental illness, and addiction. She emphasized the importance of seeking help and talking to a psychiatrist about her challenges and daily life.

The panel discussions at the event also touched on topics such as living with lupus and HIV, highlighting the importance of women being aware of themselves and seeking help when needed. Dr. Jenkins advised caregivers to schedule rest breaks and consult with their primary care physician when looking for a licensed mental health professional.

The event served as a reminder that there is no shame in seeking help and support when dealing with mental health issues. As women continue to support each other in their journeys, the conversation around mental health awareness and caregiving will hopefully become more open and understanding.
