The Fertility Boosting Side Effect of Injectable Weight-Loss Drugs: What You Need to Know

Injectable weight-loss drugs like Ozempic are reportedly causing a surprising side effect – increased fertility in women. Many women have reported becoming pregnant while on birth control after using medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro, WeGovy, and Zepbound. These drugs are believed to boost fertility by correcting hormonal imbalances caused by obesity and metabolic disorders.

Although Ozempic is not FDA-approved for weight loss, it is approved to treat adults with type 2 diabetes. Dr. David Turok, an associate professor at the University of Utah Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, explained that the weight loss induced by these medications can lead to increased ovulation and fertility in heavier women.

However, the effectiveness of birth control may be compromised by these weight-loss drugs, leading to a higher likelihood of unintended pregnancies. Turok emphasized the importance of women stopping the medication at least two months before trying to conceive.

Wegovy, a higher-dose medication similar to Ozempic, is prescribed for chronic weight management and received FDA approval in 2021. It is intended for adults with a body mass index of 27 or above and weight-related health conditions.

For women planning to give birth, Turok recommends reaching a weight goal, treating other health conditions, and discontinuing the medications before attempting pregnancy. It is essential for women to be aware of the potential effects of these weight-loss drugs on fertility and take necessary precautions.
